Bart Ehrman and Bishop John Shelby Spong have written many excellent, lay-accessible works on the history and origins of the New Gospel Fictions is a very informative book in which author Randel Helms takes us expeditiously through the gospels, educating his readers to the Tictions origins of the New Testament.

Though it is a fairly short book, and only analyses a select few passages, Helms shows, how starting with Mark, these were invented based on Old Testament tales or prophecies and then expanded or altered by Mathew and Luke depending on how the Markian tale fit their theology.
