That would stura meaningless, if one paid attention to the [passage of the] Vajasaneyi Brahmana [alone]. The text forbidding the use of pungent condiments, salt, meat etc. Nor as long as his hands are wet. A teacher also, who neglects the instruction [of the student], no [longer] remains a teacher. A younger person or one of equal age he shall ask, about his well-being [employing the word kusala].
But, according to Apastamba, he must not take a pot or gourd in his left hand and pour the water into his right, as some Smrtis allow. He shall behave to sansskrit teacher’s son [who is superior to himself in learning or years] as to his teacher, but not eat the residue of his food. There can be no doubt that the south of India has been conquered by the Aryans, and has been brought within the pale of Brahmanical civilisation much later than India north of the Vindhya range. Now the Vajasaneyi Brahmana declares also, ‘The daily recitation is a sacrifice at which the Veda is offered.

Apastamba Grihya Sutra (Original Sanskrit Text)
This is because it is difficult to know the procedures directly from the Veda-s. The fact that Apastamba confined his activity to the composition of Sutras is highly important for the determination of the period to which he belonged. One shall run after him, if he runs. Or aapastamba reciting the Vyahrtis [om, bhuh, bhuvah, suvah]. II, 2, 5, 17, with reference to a householder who teaches the Veda.
Others refer the prohibition to ‘sipping water for the sake of apastaamba and translate, He shall not sip water standing or in a bent position [except in case of necessity],’ ie. A person who speaks in this manner, shows that he considers the holy ages during which the great saints saw with their mind’s eye the uncreated and eternal texts of the Veda to be past, and that all he claims is a thorough acquaintance with the scriptures which had been handed down to him.

They are mostly given as seshas or parisishtas, tacked on at the end, and generally marked as such in the MSS. Haradatta gives as apasstamba example the order to fetch water, and adds that a voluntary 64 act on a former student’s part ought not to be forbidden.

After that [such a person] may be taught [the Veda]. The conclusion being that the origin of the Apastambiya school cannot be placed in the early times of the Vedic period, and probably falls in the last six or seven centuries before the beginning of the Christian era.
